ESIGIE 1504-1550
Kingship reached its peak of grandeur and articulation
during his reign. Usually accompanied by a retinue of
chiefs, drummers, dancers and a leopard, he rode on a
horse in a procession around Benin City to greet his subjects
and to reasure them of his total control of Benin Empire.
He encouraged art and introduced the guild of artists
in their area of specialty like:- the bronze casters,
cloth weavers and costume makers. Oba Esigie was an artist
himself.
He expanded the Benin frontiers by his many war conquests
to Idah in the North, the East and West beyond the present
day Lagos (Eko) Badagry and Dahomey.
He
established trade and diplmatic ties with Portugal.
He introduced the title IYOBA (Queen Mother) and to reside
in Uselu Benin City. |
