BRONZE WORKS

CEREMONIAL TITLE CHIEF

The Prototype of the First Kinetic Motorised sculptor In Nigeria.

The kinetic sculpture of the Oba is stylized and the sword Eben revolves in his hand. The other ceremonial sword in the torso and those at the bottom of the dress signifying his spiritual powers, strength and authority are set in alternate movements and tempo. The Kinetic sculpture appears to tell the story of the Oba (the King) an embodiment of Benin history, the people and their culture. The voids and the piercy eyes give one the impression of valor and strength

OBA ESIGIE 1504-1550

OBA ESIGIE 1504-1550

Kingship reached its peak of grandeur and articulation during his reign. Usually accompanied by a retinue of chiefs, drummers, dancers and a leopard, he rode on a horse in a procession around Benin City to greet his subjects and to reasure them of his total control of Benin Empire.
He encouraged art and introduced the guild of artists in their area of specialty like:- the bronze casters, cloth weavers and costume makers. Oba Esigie was an artist himself.

He expanded the Benin frontiers by his many war conquests to Idah in the North, the East and West beyond the present day Lagos (Eko) Badagry and Dahomey.

He established trade and diplmatic ties with Portugal.

He introduced the title IYOBA (Queen Mother) and to reside in Uselu Benin City.

QUEEN MOTHER

The Queen Mother (IYOBA) is a title created by Oba Esigie for every mother of a first born Child of the Oba and heir apparent to the throne (Edaiken). Iyesigie (Oba Eigie's Mother) is the only woman in the History of Benin that fought a war. She was a brave woman who fought to defend Benin during the Idah war. History tells us that she vowed that "Oya ara ya simwin evbuamwam" which means: Its a do or die affair to save our father land.
The Idah warriors were defeated and many of them taken captives. It during this war that guns and gun powders were introduced and used by Oba Esigie and his warriors assisted by the Portuguese missionaries in his military expedition to Idah (1515-1516). Oba Esigie commissioned a bronze head to immortalize his mother.
